For reasons, I'm curious what has become of FutureMUD and wonder what, if anything, became of it as a codebase? Is it available for independent use, pay to use, abandoned?
Also curious, if anyone happens to know, of any decent codebases that could be utilized for the purposes of running small scale RP focused scenarios, or potentially a small scale game, depending on how the dice land.
TY in advance.

As far as I know, FutureMUD is still kind of being worked on, but very slowly and it's hard to say if it'll ever be completed. The couple behind it had a child a few years back which took its toll on development. LabMUD is still running, I believe, which is kind of the testing/showcase game for the codebase. I haven't really looked at it in a while. Their forum is dead but they have a discord, you can probably google it. The RPI engine is open source and is probably your best bet. It's basically the AtonementRPI codebase. The current (dead) version of Shadows of Isildur runs this engine modified for a medieval setting, but I believe the stock is mostly for modern/future gameplay with guns. SoI had to reverse-engineer the firearms code into archery, so if you're planning a fantasy game, you might have to do that as well. github.com/webbj74/RPI-Engine
