People keep mentioning that now, since there is a base miss chance + the need to have your victim have good off/deff for you to gain, one can't skill up on animals. But why is this?
Don't animals still gain off/def? Or is it that they do, but you're "sparring buddy" is going to end up dying someway way too soon for you to be able to grind him up.

Animals spawn with more than 0 off/def don't they? So in theory you're going to find some who are decent against you.

Can you paste a link to where someone said this? I think someone was being incoherent, and got misunderstood.
I've been hunting alot of monsters. Jman weapon skill and advanced missile skills wasnt that hard.
I think there are some perfect world scenarios where clan sparring can result in far faster skilling. I saw one combination of pcs that looked like a 3x rate improvement. I saw one short lived group that looked like a 5x improvement. I havent seen them last for very long though. They require a mix of pcs with a whole lot of playtime and willingness to be helpful when the senior pcs arent getting any gains at all.

The general idea is that if your target's off/def is higher than your off/def, you will be more likely to gain off/def, whereas if your target's off/def is lower than your off/def, you will be less likely to gain off/def. This mechanic, to my knowledge, doesn't affect visible skills at all.
There are animals with high off/def; generally, if an animal is considered to be hard to beat, it's also going to have high off/def. Things like beetles, rantarri, jakhals, and such have high off/def.

Training weapon skills to master doesn't even matter that much now that you can't get advanced weapon skills.
