Hey guys,
Started playing this mud after being a long time hack / slash / semi-rp player, don't hate me for not being a hardcore rp'er. Reason I came here was to try and regain some of that oldschool immersion I used to have as a kid since other muds have started to feel like the vitual mmorpgs with very little immersion for me. Sort of just been trying to interact with about anybody I meet.
However got some mechanic questions that I wonder about after having read "how to ranger" by sirra. It seems a little dated but has some good info so I sort of went with a build similar to it under the new class system.
Some questions and I'm sure more will follow in the days / weeks to come.
1. I feel like I got a good roll on stats but are my health, stamina, and stun pretty much going to be the same for the rest of my chars life baring old age? (which I doubt is a point I'll never get to haha)
2. In relation to skill gains, Sirra made it seem like you got to do about 20 fails or so every so often to get any gains. I gleamed from someone that its actually about 1 skill fail every game hour or so and they make sure to try and do a skill attempt for everything about once a game day to skill up over time? Which is efficient? I'm not saying I'm going to borg it out, just want to develop a median for myself between efficient and enjoying myself in the world but not gimping my char through bad decisions.
3. When attempting to train multiple weapons at once, will I only get skill gains from the one that is in my primary hand? If I use a 2 handed spear that assesses as piercing, will I get two handed skill gains and piercing gains at the same time?
4. When I'm crafting items from herbs I forge, what skill is being trained? Cooking, water...? Poisons?
5. I seem to get weighed down extremely fast by stones for my slingshot. Whats a practical number to carry and does their weigh disappear sort of in my bags?
6. In the ranger guide it states to listen at taverns but I have a skill that specifically is named listen_wild. So I doubt that will get skill gains at the tavern?
7. Will I get sneak skill gains from creatures in the wild?
8. Some of the smaller creatures keep running from me and by chasing them, I run out of movement EXTREMELY fast. Should I try to hit them with my slingshot instead?
9. I keep having to drink a large amount of water. More than when I first started. Like significantly more. Am I poisoned? Or did this come form eating burnt meat?
10. Should I keep my backpack closed?

Yeah, although items can increase your stamina, usually travelling gear. The base numbers stay the same unless your endurance changes from age or temporary magic buffs. Maximum stun is temporarily lowered when using certain modal skills like listen, scan, watch and guard, but only as long as that skill is active.
It varies from skill to skill. Most skills are 1 fail = 1 gain, but combat skills are usually the exception. Weapon skills, dual wield, two handed and the hidden offense/defense have only a small chance to increase on failure, so people tend to count their misses and decide on a number that they're satisfied with. I think 20 is a bit excessive, normally I go with 10-15.
Also, combat skills have a timer twice as long as normal skills. Your skill timer depends on your wisdom and uses a fairly complicated formula, but unless you have high wisdom, you should count on a base timer of about 1.5 hours and 3 hours for combat skills. High wisdom reduces the timer by a lot, but you quickly get to the point where that doesn't matter as non-combat skills are easy to max out and combat skills are bottlenecked not by your timer but by access to combat and failures. It's almost impossible to benefit from a short skill timer in this regard as fighting all the time isn't very viable, and once you get up around journeyman level, missing becomes hard enough that you can't usually increase these skills in every "timer window." There are combat skills that virtually nobody ever maxes out because failing just becomes impossible.
Yes to all. When dual wielding, the weapon in your secondary hand ignores its associated weapon skill and instead uses the dual wield skill as if it were a weapon skill. You won't gain weapon skills from that weapon's attacks, you'll gain dual wield. Any wielding mode will increase your skill in the primary weapon wielded as well as the wielding skill (dual/2h).
It says when you look at the craft readout. With herbs, it's most likely brew.
Try to use small stones like 'a smooth black stone' or 'a rough-grained bit of x stone.' Carrying something in a container you're wearing (e.g. a backpack) reduces its weight a bit, probably like 30% or something. Putting it in a bag in your inventory doesn't change the weight.
We don't actually know if the wilderness perception skills can be increased in the city. These were added recently and nobody has posted any results.
I'm pretty sure sneak will increase whether or not anyone's around when you fail. It only has a 5% chance per failure to increase, though, so it takes some grinding.
You can sneak up on them. Alternately, ride them down until they're exhausted. This is inefficient but can work if you're determined to kill the critter.
You started out like 200% satiated so it took a long time for you to get thirsty for the first time. Now you're in "normal mode." You get thirsty very quickly if you're out in the desert, especially if it's really hot. Conventional wisdom is to bring two full waterskins when you leave the city, in case you get stuck out there for a while.
You probably aren't poisoned. If you were, it would show up in 'stat' and you would get frequent messages about it. I don't think there's any poison that makes you thirsty, but you can contract 'Krath's Touch' which is basically heatstroke. It's similarly visible and will make it clear that something's wrong with you. Comes from being out in the desert too long.
Doesn't matter very much. People can steal things out of your backpack if they're thieves, but they can also open it if it's closed, it's just marginally riskier to do so. By and large, if you're a newbie and don't look like you have anything, people won't bother to steal from you. Having played plenty of thieves, I never even bother to peek at someone who's clearly a new character. Start worrying about thieves if you're carrying particularly valuable things. There aren't really NPC thieves, and not many player thieves, either. If you have a mount, it's a good idea to keep the ticket somewhere other than your backpack since that is a thing some people might try to steal. Keep it in your belt under a cloak or something like that. Some boots are containers too and that's a good place to keep small things.

Thanks for the info. Now I'm stuck in a vicious cycle of foraging, barely getting anything to sell...trying to kill some creatures. And spending an absurd amount of money on water from a well. So much so that my coins are rapidly depleting.

It's kinda tough in the beginning. The best thing you can do is join a clan. You mentioned a well so it sounds like you're in Luir's. The message board in the tavern can probably tell you who to look for.
Until your skills are high enough to consistently get returns on foraging and skinning, sustaining yourself is difficult. There are things you can do to help it along, though, like picking plants and selling them. I can't remember what plants there are around Luir's, but there's plenty in the scrublands further north if you can survive the trip. You'll want a mount, though.
Joining a clan is recommended for anyone's first character. They'll provide food, water and guidance, and it's a less lonely existence. Playing independent requires experience not just with the code but also with social interactions, because if you don't know how to get yourself involved in things and nobody has a reason to include you, it can feel like a single-player game.

How come sometimes when I'm resting I'll only get 10 to movement a tick, but other times I'll get 30? Do not understand this.

How come sometimes when I'm resting I'll only get 10 to movement a tick, but other times I'll get 30? Do not understand this. It depends on the room you are in, the zone, the weather, the temperature, and your main class. So when its extremely hot, you rest slower. Which is why its best to time your rest when its not high sun, also avoid canyons, and ... well, open desert. Look for indoor rooms, caves, and spots that have shade. The speed of wind also affects things and sandstorm will seriously mess things up. The amount of life affects things. So places that have been defiled are bad spots to rest. Sewers are bad places to rest. While grasslands are great.

Sorry to bother you again. But my hp won't go up anymore? I've never had this happen. It is stuck at 54. Do I need bandaging now?

Wait, you mean you can either sleep OR bandage to rest up once your HP follows below a threshold right? It's never the case that you CAN'T sleep damage off, bandage is always an option, but it's just an option, not necessary, yes?

You can have an apartment-sized silt-horror slap you down to single digits, but so long as you can get away and find somewhere to sleep it off you'll be right as rain in no time.

You should consider just joining the Armageddon Discord. There is a help section and there's usually someone there who will answer your questions. These forums are more of a cheater forums, which you can use all you like. But none of your questions so far were really something you wouldnt get a detailed answer on official discord. The link to armageddon discord: discord.gg/7cnwGe5
