Eyeball asked, "Do you ever, for example, deduct five or ten points from a character's defense without informing the player?"
I suggest one of three things happened.
1. I'm pretty sure staff has either a manual guideline or automated method for adding base O and base D to clan members. I am further confident that this is either capped at, or of a specific bonus based on rank.
2. Mobs gen with a staggeringly wide stat range. On high stat mobs like rantarri, stilt lizards, and "big game", sometimes you will encounter significantly more powerful monsters out of nowhere. AI strength sandy spiders are zero joke.
3. Several people have conjectured that when staff possess or otherwise look like a monster, they usually dont turn their stats down from straight AIs. I hate to say this, but if you see a mob emit in an unusual way, have second thoughts about fighting it. I know this is an ugly comment, but I'm not the only one its happened more than once to. I may still have logs to prove this if you doubt me.

Yep. It's true. Some of the more "code-ignorant" staff (I use that term in the kindest way), instead of @possessing a mob and doing the ol' client-switch over to that whatever? They change their Imm-character to look like whatever. I was playing my Sergeant when I was one-hit by a knife thrown in from the Red's by Ouroboros. He was pissy that I was giving a little Allanaki attention to his pet Tuluki bard and threw a dagger at me, from out of the Red's. You know, where the Templars like to hang out? Anyhow, the dagger hit me for more than 130 damage and killed me instantly.
I got rezzed.
So long as there's staff members who display no actual comprehension of the way MUD code works, there's always going to be this hesitancy to engage them while they've got the reins.
