Hey Folks, Shade here from Black Sands MUD. Enjoying my time away from mudding, coding and all that bullshit. Even started up my own web hosting company and I'm making money from what I learned doing MUD stuff. While I don't have the itch to work on Black Sands anymore, I've been tossing around the idea of a new mud, designed and built by the players, the story, etc.. Much like a project. We could have a trello board for ideas and what not. I'd probably use something like Japheth's futureMUD engine when he releases it. I'll have to brush up on my c# but it won't be too hard. What are your thoughts and feelings about a community organized MUD where ideas can be upvoted and the mud based off of that? This could include skills/theme ideas/backstory/world size/etc. Let me know. - Shade trello.com/b/Ta0v4rD0/new-rpi-mud-ideas

You'd have to be clear that ideas are evaluated based on merit and how well they fit, but that it is not a democracy. Trying to please everyone, or even just trying to go along with the majority, is a good way to not please anyone. A lot of people don't know how to express what they want in a game. Some are just dead-wrong.
To be clear, though, I like your idea. I'm just warning you against thinking crowdsourcing will work without having to sometimes ignore a consensus.

For sure, my thought is to accept submissions for ideas, get them on the board and let people vote on them. The ones with the highest votes would be considered, just because something gets the highest vote, it wouldn't automatically win. There would be discussion based upon it, weighed against the other options and so forth.
The purpose of this is to design a game that everyone would want to play, using ideas 'crowdsourced' from MUD players.

A single strong vision is better than a bunch of people's conflicting ideas. Democracy doesn't work in game design.
