It was an instant-death item that had every much the horrible kill message you would imagine. Dyrinis actually killed Jazet, the Blackwing character four or five times with it, while in the middle of the game and playing, because it amused him.

who is narlacc on sa + who are you edit: oh i clicked your link. the second question stands As a staffer (1997-1999) I was Takuan, overseeing Borsail (for a bit), Kurac and some Blackwing. My major contribution to Kurac was "Special Operations". And, back on topic, my next tale entitled: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? Probably in a day or so.

Perhaps some people dislike Halaster more than he deserves. I saw him operate for a while. One of his tricks was to find some obscure PC who died an obscure death and use the body to claim his plot-bringer had killed yet another PC who opposed him, thereby maintaining the tension and fear without actually killing anyone. He's probably didn't kill nearly as many PCs as people suppose.

Halaster is extremely easily understood.
He was the quintessential GM/DM/ST who likes to insert himself, or else powerful 'stand-in' characters into the story. If Lord of the Rings was a tabletop RPG, he would be playing Gandalf or some shit.
People say he held back from killing people as if it were a virtue. It was just him being a DM. More people dead is less people to marvel at him, or be part of his story. His characters were not really PCs. He did not put himself in the mindset of a player and he was not on your same level. He was an omnipotent, powerful phenomena in whatever role he chose. He would condescendingly hold back to let other real characters feel like they mattered occasionally.
That said.
I honestly believe that Halaster enjoyed entertaining himself and those around him. He was not impartial, and if you weren't in his club at the time, you could get fucked. It was infuriating to have to deal with Halaster's alts as a regular player character, knowing that he was essentially an unkillable, walking deus ex machina.
But if you see him as just what he was - essentially a DM taking a bit too much of an /active/ role in the story (think of how all the times Gandalf saved the day, or whatever. Probably much better examples than Gandalf, since Halaster could never write a character /that/ cool. His character would've been more like a combination of Aragorn and Gandalf with a sword-staff that shot dragonfire) then he is much more easily understood.
In some ways, Nessalin, despite being a dirty neckbeard, was a slightly higher level of 'DM' than Halaster. He kept himself purely to NPC roles, and didn't really insert himself. In a way, that's admirable. But he had many other personality quirks and failures, and simply comes up short in several definitive facets of one's basic character. Nessalin at least acted on a higher authorial plane. Halaster basically operated at the lowest strata of DM.
Still, Halaster was creative. He could gin up chaos, and when he was invested, he was invested. He might've been dangerous to be around, but so are mekillots and rantarri. When Halaster stopped being creatively inspired, he did us all a profound favor and fucked off. Sanvean was paranoid but also creative. When she lost interest, she did us all a favor and fucked off.
Nessalin lost interest, and instead of fucking off, he stayed on just to make the game worse for everyone else with his apathy and poor sense of direction. It's a great thing that he has seemingly (who knows the reality of it) fucked off as well. Too bad it's like 8 years too late.

Knowing when to fuck off is definitely one of the hallmarks of a great admin.

You mentioned Mordaga and Bashare. I played with them at some point, don't recall them though. Here's what I had early 1995 or late 1994. I remember some of these dying (Tamonier's death for example) so I must have copied this to diskette without some updates (lucky this has survived so many pc updates since then). Seems to be sorted on desc which is bad - I liked to keep them in order I meet them. Keep up the stories - they are after my time but still interesting. If this is too spammy, delete it, move it, no worries. name | desc | guild | clan |

We should be able to use 'warrior', 'ranger', 'soldier', 'trader' etc in our sdescs again. Whatever argument there might be against it, it works okay for templars.

It doesn't. Wearing the robe replaces the last word in your sdesc with 'templar'. It'd be cool if other items did the same thing (militia into soldier, house cloaks into noble, merchant tokens into merchants).
