I've been back for a few weeks now and am finally ready to get back to my old obsession with 'precise' and 'easy to access' information on the game itself. (The fact that a simple, well-filled and edited wiki would be able to turn Armageddon and its community around 180° has always been an article of faith for me.)
On that note, I noticed that the wiki linked to jcarter's fansite actually still exists and even contains information (albeit a touch different from what's on these boards.) What's up with that? More precisely, is there any way that specific project could be extended with the ever-growing stock of information people have collected on these forums? Information on things that aren't likely to change radically in the future, such as spices, poisons, crafting, components, item statistics, NPC's, the bestiary, or mechanisms and code for specific commands and actions are all scattered about the our boards, ready to be organized and put into form. Facilitating access to easy, clear descriptions of how the game actually works on a wiki would not only make life easier for your average noob, but also provide a powerful pull towards players unfamiliar with or unwilling to join the "Shadowboards" so far.
(FYI.This place should be called "Liberty Boards", but that's another step for another day.)
I understand the kind of hostility any kind of project related to these boards and going against the destructive culture of pointless secrecy in Arm will suffer from the usual gamut of attacks and unpleasantness, but is there any interest in a project such as this? Would there be? Even with a restricted number of editors or safety, I firmly believe we could do a lit of good.

"liberty boards" sounds too propaganda-ish and extremist for my taste. i think anyone can edit the wiki though, afaik there's no restrictions in place

The name was meant as a tentative pinch of humour. This place could have a hundred better monikers. (Even though it is way more extreme at times than 'Liberty Board' would suggest) My main concern is that if anyone can edit the wiki, the contents might be corrupted or wiped away altogether by retaliation from arm staff.

it's been attempted before. you can undo other people's edits with a single click, so it's arguably easier to actually undo vandalism than to do it.

Hmm... I prefer they not have the opportunity to even force me to do a single click. Call it control issues or principle or fear that there must always be someone with the motivation to actually... click. (I want that shit up there forever.) I think I'll take a run at compiling some offline draft of one the above-mentioned subjects, see the kind of time/result ratio I'm dealing with alone... If I think I can do the work, I'd be more then happy to start off with some new-and-attractive wiki format - maybe find editors to monitor activity. Edit: Even if it's for the first few weeks only, but I want that thing untouchable. - Otherwise, announcing it on the official forums will fall a little flat.

Something like a "starters guide" on the shadow wiki would be better than nothing. A list of things you can do to make money, and good guild subguild choices.
I know this is all available on the forums, but having something that the new player can stumble upon would be better.

I would support this. Maps. Magick guides. Guides to twinking each guild. Guides to making money. Skilling up certain skills guides. Clan documentation of each clan, schedules etc...
All the meta game stuff that put newbs at a SIGNIFICANT disadvantage.

Did this ever see the light of day? I think most people recognize that sharing information is attacking the longevity of the game. As such, I think sharing only happens on a large scale when a player is tired of being slapped by staff, and is inspired to slap back. Just about everything you might want to know is already on this board. I and others dont mind answering some questions on things like spells and obscure mechanics, but I am not motivated to help people who refuse to do a board search first. What were you curious about?

I stopped playing shortly thereafter and life took me to a busier, more RL-centric place. Since back then I seemed to be the only one with an interest, I dropped the project after drafting the most basic plans, like structure, etc.
To be fair, I don't think Signifyinmonkey is right on this. It's a roleplaying game with a roleplaying community - as such, sharing mechanical information about the game shouldn't at all hurt the longevity or the experience offered by the game world. Everyone plays Armageddon to roleplay, not to enjoy discovering the mysteries of our outstanding code. (heavy sarcasm)
Not being able to have information about the game system on my fingertips is more annoying than anything else, the cause of many restarts and false starts for new players (with the obligatory, time-consuming, boring grind that comes with trying to make yet another long-term character). The forced silence about how the game we play 'works' is actually a pretty strong deterrent to players that aren't jaded veterans.
It's madness. A well-edited wiki would be like a breath of fresh air. It's a shame we don't have anyone willing/capable of the effort right now.

i think some info is unnecessary due to Arm staff posting more skill lists in their own helpfiles, or posts currently on the forums. others would be nice, e.g. spell info, for those that don't know it. as far as twinking guides go or other intimate knowledge, people are going to guard that knowledge. reiloth (who claims to be a former admin) flat out said that nessalin reads these boards and revamps code to spite players. www.reddit.com/r/MUD/comments/646812/new_to_armageddonmud/dg4e6yu/?context=3
