Moving into the Christmas break a bit, I made some good progress on melee combat. The foundation of combat is done, now it's a matter of filling in fluff like feats, special abilities, etc.
Also, as far as steering the direction of the production, I am kicking content several steps back over toward Dark Souls. I love Dark Souls and have played DS1 a lot (yet to get DS2), and the ruin exploration with the Dark Souls element really speaks to the "survival and horror" mixture that I'd like, while still allowing all the lore I have developed.
This change in direction also probably means that the starting area, which is still a pretty area, is likely the only pretty area left on the face of the planet.

As I've thought more about this gameplay change, here are some lore changes I would be interested in opinions on:
Instead of "The Summoning" simply being calling creatures from afar (like say, The Far Realm), it would instead have, yes, done that, but created a vortex through the cosmos that actually caused the Shadowfell realm (the place between the Prime Material and Negative Energy planes) to fold in on, essentially merge with, Prime Material. So now the "regular" land is in an eternal night, even the "brightest" days are something more akin to a new moon, and the creatures of the Shadowfell populate the "earth". What's more, it is a common occurrence now for that which dies to have its destination now merged into where it died (as in, it does not go anywhere), so the dead simply rise again, either as an undead, ghost, shadow, or what have you.
During the years of the vortex, the races of Veire would have stayed in their shelters, due to the magical instability of the land. Finally, when the merge was complete, they would have been able to emerge. However, they were underground for so long they have all adapted a level of darkvision, where if the sun were to actually shine, it would hurt. This would now mean those creatures previously locked in the subterrain of the world are free to roam the surface, and most of what you see would be creatures from the Shadowfell, the undead and other horrors.
There is still technology strewn around the world, but it is lost.
I was feeling like all of my lore and ideas were starting to be too far spread from one another, and I feel like this really consolidates them nicely.
In light of this, I have come up with the following names:
Nightfall Shadowfall Darkfall
-- I like Nightfall the best.
Edit:
This now not only really accomplishes man vs. world (as I can taint water sources, dry things up like before, whatever, but really you're just trying to survive against the horrors outside), but it also introduces a man vs. man. Everyone would be afraid of dying, because everyone knows what happens to those who die now. In fact, when an actual player died, I would have them be a wandering shadow creature.

I'm a DkS 1 and 2 vet player. Love those games. That would be very interesting to see in text.

Not too much to talk about, since the dev is changing the whole game setting/direction in the blink of an eye. Going to keep an eye on it, anyway.

why anyone would spend their time developing a MUD (and an RPI MUD at that) in the year of our lord 2015 is beyond me

Wait for FutureMUD. That's the only way I can see a new RPI having any kind of success. That or a whole team of dedicated developers, which ain't happening these days. When was the last time an RPI became succesful without that? Atonement had half of SoI's staff to support it and even that only lasted like a year and a half. Nothing since has caught on.

Atonement fizzled out because the lead/owner was like 'yah this was cool but the story's come to an end now and im shutting down'. He handed over the reins by giving the code and a new RPI popped up with the codebase (Parallel) but I don't think it ever recovered because a)who wants to play on an RPI with that kind of history and b)it wasn't well advertised
