Hey all, new user to this site. How long has this been around? I wish I had discovered this years ago I will try not to give away too much info, last time I did that I got burned hardcore. I pretty much stopped playing when they moved to the new code, my best times were in the mid-late 90s. I don't even know who was on staff back, then. Well other than nessalin and Azroen. Sanvean hadn't been promoted yet. That travesty didn't happen until later.

Hi everyone. I have to admit to being a newbie of the first order, whereas I am reading posts about your experiences through the 1990s and 2000s, I only discovered muds from September last year! So yea, bit of a newbie. Over the course of this seven months I have touched on many games, mostly RPI, I don't go in for hack and slash much. I like the idea of creating a character and seeing him or her evolve over time and with the threat of permadeath lurking in the background. I feel more commitment to that than a fairly two-dimensional character who can respawn at the expense of a few XP, etc.
The first big one I discovered was ARM and I still play there, never getting anywhere with it, but enjoying the theme. I have also been through Harshlands, Southlands, Threshold, SoI, The Burning Post II and Sindome. The latest one I am looking at is a space trading and exploration game called Miriani. It looks good and seems pretty indepth. BUT my first love is the Armageddon-type world, and that's why I have been through so many, I just don't know which one to settle into and give maybe a few years of my time to.
I like ARM as I said, but then I read some reviews, and look at posts on here and it looks like there is so much wrong with it that it leaves me wondering whether I should walk away from it altogether. (In two months of looking through this forum I am still undecided if you are all players who love the game or players who hate the game. At the moment I have settled on gamers who like the game, but feel an independent forum is the only place you can freely discuss the game.) I have seen a number of posts - well - a lot of posts talking about bad Imms and suchlike. I had one experience where my character might have been picked on by NPC puppets, but quite frankly I took it as a learning experience, so all in all and bearing in mind I am fairly new to it, I can't say my experience has been bad.
So can I ask, if anyone has laboured this far through the post, which of those mentioned would you favour? and as a player who seems to have missed ARM's 'golden age' by about a decade, would you stay with it or not? I look forward to any replies that come this way

I believe ARM (like a lot of MUDs) has immense potential for an immersive storytelling gameplay that rewards its players for being emotionally invested and doesn't scar them for life.

IF you get some sort of negative experience with the game itself or Staff, come back here and see if it's a common complaint. Also, don't read any posts from this guy named Kronibas, this guy is permanently high as a fucking kite and there's voices in his head telling him bizarre aspects of the game that nobody has experienced in the past.

I look forward to any replies that come this way I'd say stick with it. I've played off and on since 1996 and I always come back after a few years. It's definitely not the same game it was in 1996 or 2001 or even 2007 (the last time I played) and that's ok because the same people aren't running it. To my surprise it's still pretty much the same game it was back in 1996 the only difference I've noticed is the players are a little more inconsiderate and the staff is a little more standoffish. There are times where I can't wait to log on and times where I just can't bring myself to do it. As far as this forum opposed to the GDB, I wouldn't go as far as believing this forum is full of malcontents and whiners. IMO it's full of people that love the game and have different ideas of how it should be and that's because it's been different things over the years. The difference is you'll get an uncensored discussion here ranging on how the staff is terrible to how they would'e handled the Tuluk closure to the best way to make a badass character. At the end of the day, take what's valuable from the forum, just like the game, it's different things to different people. I know everybody would like to see more of something and less of something else, but if you enjoy it, play for whatever reason you have for playing.

..lol...Kronibas, got it. You know something? you might have the right approach. I have lurked in the shadows here and thinking that I might learn a few gems of how things really are, so what happens? I read a post where someone has clearly suffered an injustice and I think, 'oh fuck that then...' The next post I read seems to contradict that one and so I think, 'oh that's OK then.' So you might well be right in suggesting I leave the forums out of it and just focus on the game. I have probably spent too long focusing on player rather than character issues. Mind you, I am thinking of dropping back in on Harshlands and ESOS, as both seem pretty good.

You come to the shadowforums for two things.
1) Forbidden knowledge.
2) Highbrow political discussion.
If you have no use for either, what are you doing here???
Also hi I'm purg and this is my introduction, hi.

Thanks Lyse, that's a really good and concise statement on things. when I was first looking round this forum my thought was 'oh this must be where all the banned people go.' Then realised that isn't the case, so that's where it started to get confusing. But I think this is a brilliant site, especially the posts that offer player experience of other games, I have found that of great value. I shall re-read these responses, and any others I get and just chill out a bit. I just feared that one day I would say 'That was a waste of three years, why didn't I take note of the complaints I read about.' Thanks for responding guys, very helpful indeed.

Hi Purg. 'Forbidden knowledge' as in 'no you can't have a proper map.' that kind of thing? I know there is some kind of backlash against the gagging order on information, but to be honest I quite like that, I want to find out for myself. I loved spending two months mapping every street and building in Tuluk, (what a bloody waste of time that was.) I don't want to be told where I can buy water cheaper, or who sells cheaper knocked-off goods. This is supposed to be a fantasy parallel to RL, and that's how I am comfortable playing. I tried one called No Return, a Walking Dead-type of MUD, but the OCC chat and the IC chat was difficult to distinguish and there is no immersion, not for me at any rate. My other issue is being in England and most of these games are both US based and mostly US players. So most have a 'zone' where there is nobody to RP with. The only three exceptions I have found are ARM, Harshlands and Sindome, they seem to have closer to 24/7 activity.

Seriously no stop reading these forums. Play the game and have fun and come back when you're experienced and jaded enough to complain

Jcarter's advice is the best I've seen. Play Arm and enjoy it, if you can. Armageddon can still be a rewarding and immersive experience, depending on what type of RP you like and what's fun for you. By reading this forum you can learn which type of RP will be fun and which will lead only to frustration.

To each their own in this particular environment.
Nobody's really going to tell you anything here: you have to be looking for it to find it. Things are really simple to find, though. Jcarter could have a pinned ticker with the new headlines of Arm's IC actions for the day, but this place is more chill than that.
