you only need sneak. So a thief subguild gives city sneak. No regular, non-extended subguild offers hide as a skill. None of them. But if you have sneak/hide (ranger) and get sneak of the other area from a subguild (thief), you got sneak/hide of both types. So sneak skill is the key, as far as regions go.

Most of these combinations seem to be about fighting (which is neat, mind you), but I wonder...Is there any point, then, to playing something like a Merchant/Armormaker, or a Merchant/Tailor, or a Merchant/Jeweler? When I first began playing it was explained to me that if I took a subguild like one of those it made an ultimate crafter sort of person. I just wonder if I would have gotten those skills anyways as part of being a merchant, and if I wasted my subguild.

Glad to know so I don't make that mistake again! In your opinion, what are some terrible combinations?

The only crafting subguild that makes sense for a merchant is armor crafting. The reason for this is that merchants gain armor crafting by branching armor repair. And Armor repair is notoriously difficult to branch. Another crafting skill that merchants dont get is brew. So Merchants/physicians is a pretty common all around combo.
(burglar or pickpocket)/thief celf of any guild/thief. Warrior/guard Ranger/hunter Merchant/crafting subguild/house servant
Those are horrible comboes that come to the top of my mind.

I've made all those bad choices.
And then I came to this forum and learned how to be competent.

Warrior/nomad was my favorite. Mounted combat was exceptionally powerful at one time. They actually changed the way charge/trample worked at one time, because they didn't like my ranger killing meks with it. And a hugely overpowered staff NPC sent specifically to assassinate me. He was a delf, sadly, and got charge/trampled into the ground. Right after I killed him, the game 'crashed', and the guy was alive again.
That delf NPC was the only humanoid that ever dodged me, past a certain amount of playtime. But he could not dodge a trample. He also disarmed me like eight times. Fortunately, he could not bash me while I was mounted.
It was an epic battle, but I was not surprised when the next patch had a change to trample in it.
