You're not quite wrong, but there is this one thing anyone can do to see if the death is fake: contact amos People just kind of vanishing doesn't really happen because of the Way's infallibility. The only way I could see it work is if you were a Nilazi and just never used a pseudonym, ever, and switched bodies on the regular. Psionic suppression, though? My thoughts exactly.

Doesn't that tell you that your attempt was blocked? Like when you try to contact someone who's in one of the no_psi rooms? They'd still know you exist.

If I recall correctly, that's a difference between nilazi shield and psionic suppression. One of them blocks psi contacts. The other one, you simply fail to find them.
But I might be off on that one.

You mean Shield of Nilaz? Ah, that's different IIRC, just means you're invulnerable against spells that target you, e.g. fireball. In contrast, Turn Element rebounds the spell and hits the caster.
Psi suppression from what I remember just means a player can keep trying to contact, but they will receive a return as if the name doesn't exist/you're not logged on.

Shield of Nilaz prevents the use of psi as well. But I think if someone is trying to contact you, they get an echo of being blocked. While psionic suppression just makes it like you're not logged in.
But I could be wrong.

I never knew that about shield meaning people would be unable to contact you. Shows how much I spoke and played with people ooc later on in my time playing. =/
Nah, if the caveat about shield of nilaz is right then you're right about suppression since I know that much from IC interactions I had.
