Yeah, I created a character. Currently lost, wandering around Tashal. I made a Surf (I think?) but looking over the info on the site, I think I'm supposed to go farm somewhere? How locked in are those castes? Can a surf become, say, a foot soldier, town guard, etc? I didn't come here to play Harvest Moon. Lol.

Heya Jack.
Probably more knowledgeable people to answer your questions out there but Id check out 'help yeoman' to see some interesting opportunities for farmer/soldiers.
Also I know the Chelmarch group is actively recruiting farmer/soldiers in Trobridge.
Also, if you'd like to go solo farmer you can find deed objects for enclosures and farms. They're found at masons offices I believe and come with crafts to create farmable fields and an animal pen. Typically just outside cities you'll find cottage objects where you can place the farm.
Posting on a tavern board usually gets a quick response from players who are recruiting and Ive found that emailing staff for advice is a good way of figuring stuff out. Staff are very helpful on HL.

Yeah, I thought the Chelmarch Army looked active and fun. I was leaning towards checking it out if I got a chance, but I don't think I'm in the right city for that. Unless I run into their recruiter while she's in town.

Sorry but I think the RL time investment is valid. In a hardcore game it should take time investments to become masters or adepts. Do Jedi's become Masters in one month? Don't think so. And jack, the Chelmarch is known for being dangerous and there's a fair chance of dying while serving.

Sounds like my kind of party.
As he runs to the end of the covered wagon, hefting a long steel greatsword, the classically handsome, buttchinian young man says: "Come on you apes, you want to live forever?"
Is the entire game as badly mapped as Tashal? I'm having a hard time coping with the layout. A trip around the block looks like 5e, 6n, 4w, 1s and you're back where you started... Probably my number one biggest MUD pet peeve, as a devout explorer and mapper.

Hi. I'm between characters so I'd thought I'd give this one a try. How long is the waiting time for the character application, do you reckon? It's been over a day... Yes, I'm whiny and I despise myself!

My app took a couple days. It is a bit longer than most games.
Well worth the wait though.

I got approved for my first character on harshland and so far I'm liking it. I like how I interacted with other players immediately after I chose my starting location.
Things that seem weird is the quest system they have going on. Theirs a lot of ooc items that you have to use to do work for NPCs when you use these ooc items they trigger an event with the NPC you are working for which is pretty neat but pretty complicated if you're not use to it.

Yea, the whole automation thing can be a bit of a hurdle at first. But once I got used to it, I found I really enjoyed having that sort of 'back-up' work when I have nothing going on from other pc's directly.
Just to explain;
In HL you have the opportunity to do odd jobs.
It's all automated in crafts.
You basically get an 'income token' every RL week that you can use for a variety of tasks. As a non-aligned pc (not a guilded craftman, military org pc, or clergy member) you can basically do odd jobs around cities/towns for npcs to make some coin on the side. I think clergy, guilded folk and military use the tokens for other ways to make income, but I've not had the chance to see how/for what.
You get 6 city errands lists from a token, which you can use in crafts ranging from pulling guard duty, bouncing at Inns, sweeping streets, lighting street lamps, ect for a small, yet appropriate amount of silver. You also get skill ticks for the skill used in the craft, a good way to become..well, more skilled, for a newer player without having to risk life and limb. For example, pulling a guard duty can result in a parry skill tick as you fend off the 'bad guys' trying to shop lift.
Where it gets a bit complicated is that you need to source materials sometimes for the craft (a bandage for guard-duty, oil for lamps, ect) and you also need to use a 'work hard' craft to produce a labour token that draws from your productivity.
Every pc gets 100 productivity each RL week (or payday, which replenishes the income token and productivity back to 100).
Productivity seems to be a check on going overboard spam crafting, meaning pcs sort of have to plan out what work/creating they are going to do in that time spam. The income token seems to be a check on how much vnpc income a pc can generate. Selling pc to pc face-to-face or through your shop isn't limited, but can be restricted due to guilded regulations.
Ultimately, at a glance it seems pretty complicated. Once you go through it a time or two, it makes more sense and becomes routine.
***
I like the automation for housing, farms, and odd jobs to boot...but much prefer getting work straight from pcs (which there certainly is no lack of.)
I agree too, that HL is pretty awesome for how inclusive the players are. New player in basic newbie rags and lots of questions? No problem!

FYI, Harshlands hit a record high 48 players online last Sunday for a big rpt.
Was pretty awesome.

How viable is it to just ride around and hunt and what not in Harshlands? I really just like exploring a lot in muds but ages ago when I made a HL pc I remember feeling like being your typical Arm hunter wasn't viable.

From the very little bit I've experienced. Food/drink is easier to get for free. Hunting or foraging and selling to npcs gives you a living wage. Networking is slower than in say Allanak, because of the lower numbers. But PC leatherworkers do appear to use hunters. And competent combat PCs do have other uses, even if they are indies. At a low level, with low armour, if you meet a mob, being incompetent with commands doesn't automatically mean you are dead. In general PCs seem slower to die. There are less civilised areas to play in, with a few clanned groups.
