Faroukel got it in one. Given the scant player base of most muds these days the profession chart goes a long way for balancing things out. What use is a third weaponsmith in a town right? Though I have to disagree with him on start locations. If you want mudsex and boredom Tashal is a great place to start. If you want at least a small modicum of tension and excitement Trobridge is where it's at. Kaldor military on side. Thardic legion on the other. Legal dark faith sprinkled liberally through out. Oh and more mudsex and boredom. yeah not sure how its doing now but one of the things i always liked abt harshlands was the diversity of factions. diff towns with ppl that were str8 warring with each other on some lvl there were more ppl then so u could pretty much do ur own shit but now i hear since its much smaller the staff have a microscope on everyone

Wow, Zargen. There's a blast from the past. Glad to hear you're in HL. I admit, haven't much experience with Trobridge, but I'm slowly making my way there! Hopefully see you there when I pull in.

Let's say I wanted to dive straight into the Mudsex environment.
What would you recommend for character creation? Male, female? Which city should I point? Those sorts of things.
Also, what's the average population of the game around these days? Higher / Lower than Armageddon?

Playerbase right now is at 15 pc's. I typically see it between 10 - 20 at most times, ranging throughout the day.

I do not recommend playing Harshlands unless you want to spend up to RL years just maxing a single combat skill alone. (if you're combat-based). They made a change where you cap out at Expert (scales then to master, and to superb and it gets increasingly harder to even get a tick up the higher your skill gets), and require aggressive mobs to tick up. Npcs. Not clanned. So you can't spar and improve that way anymore, even with other PCs. Now, I can have the best armor IG minus chivalric, the best weapons, with master axe and expert block/parry, and still lost 70% of the time to wildlife, - without tick ups. The past few months have been log in, get owned by a critter, spend IG money, idle while wounds heal, and repeat (WITH BASICALLY NO SKILL GAINS. RL MONTHS. And this is just at expert! Not master, or superb) This change encourages players coming together as groups for adventures. Problem is, not all characters IG can be with other characters, or want to. Problem is, some people can't log in at certain times while players are around. It's also medieval times, in an RPI, if we are all buddy buddy and hunting with our backs to other PCs IG in the woods, they should be robbed for being so damn trusting. Or killed. I cannot, in good conscience, continue to play a game where I have to /break my characters roleplay/ just so that he/she can be with pcs to -skill up-, since you'll get owned with no reward otherwise, or have to go out of my way and shift my RL day around just so I can afford sleepless nights to game with players, in order to skill up. Yeah, I could continue to go out and get owned by wildlife mobs for the next RL months and still only get 1-2 tick ups in that entire time, but lets be honest, do you go out straight out of chargen and start trying to train off of drov beetles, or spiders? Probably not. Because it's suicidal.
The game is beautiful. The staff are great, for the most part. There is staff favoritism. But that's every game. I recommend giving it a shot. But if you have a combat-based PC, be aware of what you are getting into.

Holy crap, a game that requires time investments to progress, blasphemy!
Also, there should be consequences to playing a chaotic character. it's on you whether or not you want to rob others in game. You have the choice, but are you willing to pay the price?

I hear there's a thing in place which resets your skill gains for the day if you type 'skills', it's meant to discourage people from going for skill-ups in an RPI.

I don't know the entire situation with skill gains, but if you're not able to progress beyond expert you could have capped out at high-end expert.
It would be neat if they would notify you about being capped, like in SoI, however I really like that when you type skill, it shows which skills can not be progressed due to a cooldown. Basically, it'll let you know that its pointless to keep grinding away at trying to increase a skill due to overuse for a short period of time, at which point you're free to try and skillgain again.
Can't really speak so much as to how HL works, as I'm still getting settled in, however on SoI, which is fairly similar, intelligence plays a key role in how quickly you advance in a skill.
While I'm pretty certain Prodoman has a better understanding of the system, you can always type help 'weapon skill' to find out the primary skills used to determine the cap. (ex. axe = str str dex). If you have avg str and dex, it's pretty understandable to not be able to progress beyond expert. If it's a combat build, it could be low intelligence that's hampering your skills gains.
Ultimately, every situation is unique I suppose. I was able to progress from Familiar weapon skill to expert in a matter of a few weeks with regular sparring (once every 2 rl days or so) when the cooldown was not in place. I was also able to raise crafting skills from novice to familiar in the same time period with fairly minimal crafting, usually timed to the cooldowns. I like to think that the pcs INT rating has something to do with that.

Also, I'm not too sure about the skill reset. I'm not a grinder per se, but I am someone who enjoys seeing a character progress in skill.
If typing skill reset the gains for the day, I'd likely be at the same level as when I enter the game.
edited to fix horrendous grammar

Epic strength. Great dex. - which means you have skill caps = to, or surpassing Sindarin or Khuzdul, depending on the skill. No, I was not capped. And yeah. Has anyone had to spend over 3 RL months, of daily combat, to raise journeyman shield to advanced? (in comparison to arm) Fuck no. I am -well- aware of the code, and stats, and caps. That's not the point, buddy. you should not have to invest 3 months of your time, to get 1-2 skill ups. As for evil pcs, you already -are handicapped. WITHOUT INCLUDING the changes!

I wonder if I still have my PC on this game? I tried it with Delerak 2-3 years ago, but we ended up quiting because of situations. Basically at the time the entire game economy flowed from the ass of one noble, which made it unplayable for us. I did log out with a steel bastard sword and bronze breastplate that I stole from the Kadens, and that shit was hard to come by at the time. Though, if still alive, my PC is probably like 100 years old. haha.
So, have they fixed the economy? That was the biggest turn off for me. I found the imms to be, for the most part, a breath of fresh air when it came to working with players and stuff.

Have to change my initial statement about starting in Tashal.
Zargen is correct that Trobridge is a better location for a new player to start in.
Tashal is large and has a pbase, but Ive found Trobridge to be less sprawling with a similiar sized and very active playerbase.
Orbaal seems to be the lesser of the three areas in regards to activity but offers its own features for play.
Have been really enjoying my pc, who started in Orbaal and now is in the thick of things in Trobridge.
Really suggest that SoI emigres give HL a shot.
