Hey guys I got some new content up. I reconnected with an old friend of mine and I had the idea to interview him about his thoughts on MUDs, RPIs, etc. It went way too long almost an hour but I setup a table of contents so you guys can skip the boring stuff like the intro and mudding background. We talked a lot about RPIs, Arm, SOI (he staffed SOI) Harshlands etc. Let me know what you think as this is my first time doing this. I already know his audio was crap and I told him that after the video and he actually mentions it in the video. He travels a ton and was in a hotel on his laptop just doing this on my own whimsical urging to do so. Thanks guys.

I liked it dude... brought back a lot of old RPI memories. Jason Mount seems so familiar to me also... does he visit here? I'd like to know his characters from HL, and did I hear him say he was on FEM as well?

He has been involved with RPIs since the beginning I think. He was Falco at SOI, and he goes by Prof at other places. No as far as I know he does not post here sorry.

Jason is one of the smartest guys I know. I'm hoping he'll speak with me some more about his ideas/experiences and just general thoughts about muds. I don't think he plays anywhere anymore.
My next idea I think is to a round table discussion with a few people.

I remember much of the stuff he's talking about regarding HL. I remember going to Coronan on a few LK missions, it was a nice place, just a shame it wasn't populated. I can't believe he made it 3 months on his own there. He seems very switched on, smarter than I. I'd be hopeless in an interview like that, but I enjoyed it. I love to think about the old days... I started on an RPI, so I guess I was lucky, but you can still start out with a lot of the bad habits you two talked about. I think it's just people in general can be selfish, especially since it's an online thing and not face to face, feels like you can get away with it easier maybe? Big part of it I think it's a maturity thing. I'll admit I was twinkish at times, and generally only thought about myself, and I caused trouble on forums, but I was only a teenager then, and a young adult. I've grown a lot since then, and mostly now I try to think about the enjoyment of others instead of myself. I read something back in this thread, a comment saying it's the wasted potential that seems to upset so many.. I think that is spot on. I love ARMs code... but the world seems to be dying. I think we get so familiar with the code we play on too. Going back to SoI's code just seems... weird for me, since it's been down for so long. If ARM's code could get out it would be the best thing in the world. I'm still crossing my fingers for FUTUREMUD. There seems to be too much bureaucracy in ARM before anything can even happen story wise. Even for the little things. The game is still enjoyable, but it could be so much better, and that is upsetting. We are at the opposite end of the pendulum now, all control has been taken away from the storytellers, where as times past they had too much freedom. Finding that middle ground is hard. "We are just volunteers"... yes.. that is true, we've heard it a million times. What's the point if staff are no longer enjoying being staff? They need to have fun too. It's easy to then say just hand over the reins to the next person, but that needs to be done very carefully, as MUDs can die when changing hands. I've seen it happen with two RPI muds. So what then? If they aren't having fun as "DM"... at the end of the day they shouldn't be in that position. Much like it's volunteer, you aren't being forced to be in such a position. They are the Dungeon Masters of the D&D world... get shit happening. What's holding them back from having animations and stories running left and right? Fkn bureaucracy. Structure is good, and rules, but c'mon.... I liked how you guys talked about player death as well. I think ARM's problem is that the message is "It's a harsh desert world" and "Murder Corruption Betrayal", people expect there characters to die, so they do whatever they want with no worry about consequence, because it's the common mentality that characters live just "a couple weeks", and there's those that just make a character to "cause trouble for players to have some fun", which is just player killing PC's who actually have devoted lots of hours to characters that actually enrich the world. These suicide characters are something I really hate, and have no place in a RP MUD. I ranted a heap... sorry. Your video just got me thinking and feeling voiceful. I couldn't be bothered to go back and edit bad spelling etc., so don't shoot me pls

Wow that's crazy you played HL around that time. I'm really glad I did the video now even if one person got that much out of it. I will try and see if I can get Jason to come post here.

What's more crazy is there is a Delerak on my ICQ... I only really used it about 10+ years ago before a lot of other chats became popular... Im guessing it must have been from HL or early SoI, cause I didn't know anyone from ARM back then but RL mates really.

Wow Forever's End, I forgot all about that one. Wasn't that a clone of something else? Forever's End used Harshlands code, but it was an original fantasy world. Still my favourite.
