You can take a sub-guild for sneak Hunter/Rebel give wilderness sneak (hunter is great on ranger, seems redundant but getting fletchery early is super helpful.
Thief gives you city sneak/hide on top of keeping you from having to branch sneak.
the extended sub-guilds are even better.
Scan is retard easy to train as long as you know where to look. Tons of creatures are constantly hidden all over the place. Just keep it toggled always, you'll hit master with it in a few days.

Listen's pretty straight forward, expect some tavern sitting, throw on the listen. Scan, when I was training it, if you're in the south, there's a ton of vultures and a few hidden rats outside Allanak that take master scan to see, to the south. Out east, salt worms or jozhal as well. Out west...well, spiders aren't worth a scan fail for anyone that's still training scan, really.
Ranger/Thief is probably the best subguild I've heard of, city/wilderness sneak, and silent weapon drawing from sheathes. Though, if you don't care about city sneak, and aren't doing extended subguilds, a good one might be thug for shenanigans sapping people in the wilderness, though the rest of the skills are sort of a waste. Thug with ranger's potential bludgeoning is still worthy of notice. Some sort of crafting subguild wouldn't hurt either if you don't care for city sneak. Jeweler or whatever is nice for a couple reasons. High forage, gems, value and all that make for easy markets, as well as the potential to hit them all. Though, sid becomes a non issue after some point, so that's really up to taste.

The fastest way to raise listen is to fail to detect someone sneaking. There's no real easy way to do this unless you know sneaky person and have them shadow you around. If you're a runaway mul ranger, you're gonna have a hard time no matter how you do it.

To fail 'listen'? Don't think I've heard of that. Don't really believe it either, but maybe that's a thing. Listen fails anytime you have it on, you're in a bar, at a table, and don't hear the conversation at someone else's table. Or similar. Scan fails to someone sneaking around you, sure. Don't think listen does. But I admit, I could possibly be wrong here.

Scan attempts to detect those that are hiding. Listen attempts to detect those that are sneaking.
